Materials and methods - ThangkasPaints and canvas The canvases are made of cotton, primed very even, but not too stiff, so the paintings can be scrolled. Some rare and very fine thangkas are painted on a layer of gold covering the whole canvas. The artist can then use the point of a crystal to carve ornaments directly to the golden surface. This requires very good skills, because nothing can be repaired or painted over later. Brocades |
